Community Gardens on the Rise in San Antonio

YAY!!! YAY!!! YAY!!! There's an article "A New Crop",on the topic of SA's community garden resurgence by Colin McDonald in today's San Antonio Express-News...this is such a big deal locally!!!

McDonald reports that SA-town has seen a four-fold increase (4 to 16) in community gardens in the last year.

The article, which focuses on the South Presa Street community garden, was on the front page of the METRO SECTION by a COMMUNITIES REPORTER...and they mentioned VICTORY GARDENS!!!!
...World War II rationing created Victory Gardens throughout San Antonio, and since then their popularity has waxed and waned. [Angela Hartsell of the Green Spaces Alliance of South Texas] said she is seeing a resurgence spurred by rising food costs, a desire of a younger generation to emulate what their parents and grandparents did and a stronger sense of community.

They also have a separate story by Tracy Hobson Lehmann about the health benefits of gardening for gardener and garden on the cover of the lifestyle section. It's so powerful to have TWO sections focusing on gardening.

Kudos, SA E-N!
Count me proud to subscribe to my local newspaper.

UPDATE: I just wanted to add that the community gardens article mentions the gardeners started with railroad ties...this is controversial, because ties are treated with creosote, a known carcinogen. I feel responsible to point that out. If you're considering a raised bed on a budget, you might Google options for raised beds using cinder block, stacked stone and so forth. Be careful with treated lumber, too. You really need to use untreated lumber to be safe. And I was all swell and happy with my recycled plastic raised beds, but am wondering now about the BPA connection....
