Media Watch: VG as a Necessity...Again?

First-blush critics of the nascent Victory Garden (VG) revival seem to regard it as the domain of "elitists"...but, in truth, it's really not. Sure, the more visible proponents are journalists, bloggers, and so forth. Yet, as I posted on Wednesday, I know a handful of people who have latched onto the notion or something similar (square foot gardening, to whit) on their own to feed a need to cultivate or simply to feed their families.

But if you don't believe me...that the VG notion revival is catching on across the country...look elsewhere, if you want for "proof": An intriguing article by Jane Black in yesterday's Washington Post on how consumers are coping with rising prices includes a description of Virginian Eddie Beuerlein's garden, which is fashioned from old tires and inspired by the original VG movement. Beuerlein cites fuel and grocery costs as the impetus for his garden, which he believes will produce more than enough food for his family. Expect more anecdotes like Beuerlein's in the coming weeks and months as the MSM begins to explore the new VG initiative.

I really, really wish a presidential candidate would push the new VG notion forward...arguing that it's a responsible, low cost, earth-friendly solution to our individual and collective issues. It's not the only solution, granted, but it's a start. And clearly--based on the recent cropping up of VG-inspired op-eds--a good number of Americans "see" it as such.
