My Garden This Week

Exciting news...we've begun to harvest. So far, two zucchini and one yellow squash plus some fresh basil (the Genovese sweet basil still hasn't come up...I may try a pot this weekend). We had a lot of heavy wind and rain last week, which caused a flurry of mushrooms to pop up an disappear (as my husband said, "See, that's some really good soil that I put out there."). The weather also caused a few precious tomato blossoms to snap off, although we do have one or two tiny patio 'maters that should be ready soon. I think I planted some of the tomatoes too close together, so I might pull one or two and move them to containers. Not sure how that will turn out. And the zinnias have put on their tight little buds.

We're supposed to hit near-triple digits this week, so I've covered half the bed with shade cloth and the other half with burlap in a "shade off" to see which option is better. Given the sun's heat and intensity here...and our lack of shade in the yard...cross your fingers that one technique works out for us.

As much as I'd love to share new pics, my laptop is in the shop and I'm having to blog by the seat of my pants. Expect pics in a few days...and a recipe later this afternoon.
