Our Garden This Week

The whole yard looks great...we've got agapanthus, a beautiful pot of bright red hibiscus, roses, Mexican petunias, wildflowers--all gorgeous and strong. The ten new Knockout Roses that my husband planted recently look just dandy...when they went into the ground a few weeks back, we had a particularly windy period and the poor things looked rough for awhile.

The Victory Garden (VG) looks fine, too. As I mentioned previously, we've got squash starting to come in and some baby cucumbers, poblanos, tomatoes, and beans on the way. The marigolds look fantastic and the zinnias are just about ready to bloom

Last night, I got a wild hair and fashioned three trellises from limbs my husband trimmed from our Argentine senna bush (look for a long post about it come fall...it is magnificent to view then). We were late in cutting it back--it dies back every year--and I just hated the idea of putting those pretty reddish-brown sticks in the trash. So I tied them together with green garden twine and placed them in a row behind the VG, strapping them to the fence since I can't get that caliche clay to budge  much. With a little luck, we should have some morning glories growing out there soon on the trellises. I might pick up some moonflower seeds...a childhood favorite...to mix with them. Am also trying to root a cutting of pink coral vine in a seaweed solution to move out there. Would love to fill that giant fence with vines. (Also, gourds could go out there...my next project is to plant some swan neck gourd seeds and see how they do.)

As mentioned, we're making the move to organic gardening. I'm very pleased with the results from using fish emulsion and seaweed on the VG and some potted plants. The fish didn't smell quite as bad as I thought it would, and the results are worth it.
