Over the last few weeks as I prepared to get my act together and launch this thang, I've spent some time surfing the web in search of intriguing garden-related sites. I have to confess, though I knew good and well that the phenomenon existed, I had no idea that there was so much stuff out there to explore. Not a clue. It's frankly...overwhelming.
But if you're intrigued with the notion of garden blogs and would like to start with the higher end of the full blogosphere spectrum, then here are some of my faves to get you started:
- Foodshedplanet.com - Smart, informative...and the home to Victory Garden Drive which aspires to sign up 2 million new gardens in 2008. It's a bold gesture, but sometimes that's what is needed. Stick something in the ground and sign your name on the site to show your support. Oh, and food shed is a new term for me. Here's a definition if it's new to you, too.
- You Grow Girl - For someone who loves words and images, this site is the bee's knees. Just looking at those pics make me want to move to Canada. Well, almost. For now, I'll stick to checking this site regularly and consider purchasing blogger Gayla Trail's book of the same title. Oh, and if you think gardening--especially VGs--are only the domain of folks with land, you must check out the wonderful photos of organic, vibrants plants producing fruits and veggies in things like discarded food service buckets. Also, some great "early Spring" pics of Canadian community gardens. (I chuckle at "early Spring"--my pansies croaked WEEKS ago and it looks like they're great in the Frozen North!)
- Human Flower Project - The primary writer, Julie Ardery, is based in Texas (yay!) and together with her "correspondents" reports on "how people live through flowers." It's a remarkable contribution to the web, situated on the intersection of horticulture and cultural reporting. Striking, erudite...aw, heck...run, don't walk.
