Was thumbing through Sarah Ban Breathnach's A Daybook of Comfort and Joy. For June 22, she recommends sowing a Victory Garden and closes with this quote, by Alice B. Toklas:
"The first gathering...of salads, radishes and herbs made me feel like a mother about her baby--how could anything so beautiful be mine? And this emotion of wonder filled me for each vegetable as it was gathered every year. There is nothing comparable to it, as satisfactory or as thrilling, as gathering the vegetables one has grown."
I offer it a day late of when Breathnach intended you to read it, but just in time to wish you "Happy Midsummer's Eve."
