Feelin' Grape-ful

A few weeks back, my friend A. joked that while the rest of our neighborhood tinkers with veg beds and such, she'd stick with her li'l green grapes. This is funny because she's barely lifted a finger to cultivate the grape vine growing on her back patio, having inherited the plant from the house's previous owner when she moved in last autumn.

And yet she's had a bumper crop.

This isn't to say that A. is disinterested in or incapable of gardening--it was she who kept our plants alive during our vacation--she just has other priorities.

Like eating grapes. Lots and lots of them. Oh, and sharing them.

For over a month, the vine has borne tiny, sweet orbs. I'd promised to make wine out of the batch she provided me, but have yet to do so. Probably because I'm too busy trying to keep my tomatoes alive in the drought and heat.

Meanwhile, A. just took a long weekend at the beach. The grapevine did fine while she was away, natch.

There's an important principle here, I think. A lesson about the right plant in the right spot taking root and becoming bountiful at the right time.

Sometimes maybe the best thing to do is sit back and let Nature do her part.

That's what "A. of the Grapes" thinks, anyway.

Know what? She might be right.

Try as we might to see gardening as a struggle, sometimes it's just not
