In light of Prince Charles' open support of a Dig for Victory revival, I did some research and discovered that this poster was very popular in the U.K. during WWII...so I thought I'd put it up for kicks.
Oh, and I contacted my friend Joyce (whose family participated in Britain's WWII gardening effort) to see what she thinks of this li'l development. (Okay, not so much "contacted" as flagged her down in the driveway yesterday.) She's "absolutely thrilled" (which sounds very posh with her charming accent!) and says she hopes U.S. leaders follow Prince Charles' lead.
In the meantime, if anyone else remembers the above poster or the U.K.'s wartime Dig For Victory initiative...or is taking part in the British revival, please leave a Comment...
For Further Exploration:
• Images of Camilla and Charles at a Dig For Victory organic allotment...where she ate some birthday cake.
• Cute school-based Dig for Victory garden here. (Scroll down a bit on their page...)
• From the 2005 Chelsea flower show, a shot from Flickr of the winning garden which featured a Dig for Victory bed.
• Also from Flickr, shot of a Dig for Victory shelter in St. James Park with a new planting of veggies. You may remember from my article on Joyce that, during The Blitz, many gardens featured air raid shelters.
• Because I like old posters (credit a graduate degree in art history for that quirk), here's a Daily Mail story with some old British war posters.
