My Note from Senator Cornyn

So, a few weeks back, I wrote this note to my congressman and both Texas Senators:

Please consider enacting legislation for a formal, national Victory Garden revival.

With rising concerns about food, fuel and national security (and the Fourth of July on the horizon), Americans have an opportunity to take a patriotic, bipartisan approach rooted in U.S. history. By raising even small amounts of food in our homes, businesses, schools and community, we can cut our reliance on fuel, ensure access to fresh, safe food and demonstrate once more our collective resilience in the face of adversity. The federal government's support of the grassroots Victory Garden revival through educational endeavors need not be costly. It's largely a matter of our reframing many of the above issues in such a way that the general public regards Victory Gardening as a logical, sound course of action.

This is what I received back today from Senator Cornyn's office:

Dear Mrs. Price:

Thank you for contacting me regarding food safety. I appreciate having the benefit of your comments on this matter.

The United States has the safest and most plentiful food supply in the world because our food safety policy is rooted in sound science and supervised by the FDA and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. You may be certain that I will continue working with my colleagues to ensure that the production, transportation, and marketing of our foods are held to high standards.

I appreciate having the opportunity to represent you in the United States Senate. Thank you for taking the time to contact me.

Sincerely,

JOHN CORNYN
United States Senator

Dontcha LOVE form letters? Do you see a disconnect? Yeah, yeah...they get a lot of notes from constituents...but take the time to address the content of the note, darn it. Not hard to do...here's how:
Dear Mrs. Price:

Interesting idea to revive Victory Gardening. Thank you for your input and I'll take it under consideration.
Geesh.

Contact your reps, too...see what kind of response you get...and then go tell McCain & Obama to
