Over at We Can Solve It! today, they're toasting Texas for a new $4.93 billion wind energy project, part of it eventually going to oilman-turned-"environmentalist" T. Boone Pickens who just happens to own a heap of land sporting the necessary turbines. Meanwhile, at Tree Hugger, there's a bunch of chat about the impact of the new technology on bird migration.
I lack the scientific knowledge to say who is "right" on this issue...though if we can use fewer fossil fuels, that sounds good. I think.
On the other hand, for me, Pickens...well, I don't entirely trust him. Even though I find myself drifting more to the radical center, I ain't no fan of encouraging swift boat tactics from ANY side. Why reward corrosive behavior? So...his intentions, his ethics are suspect for me.
And while I deeply respect WCSI's commitment to open-minded, bipartisan approaches...I do worry about the birds...and our predilection for rushing in and "fixing" things without first figuring out the long-term pro/cons or emphasizing more basic approaches like learning to use less energy in the first place.
No wonder people prefer to stick their heads in the sands on sustainability issues...it's hard to know precisely whom to trust.
