Victory Garden Meme (Fall Harvest '08)

As mentioned last week, bloggers are invited to participate in a little experiment designed to amplify the Victory Gardening buzz online. (Any kind of blogger can participate, too...you don't have to be a garden or "green" blogger per se.)

Here's my first contribution, just some quick answers to some prompts included in last week's post:

  • What are your favorite local sources (ex. nurseries, blogs, reliable regional "celebrity" gardeners, county/parish extension office)? Right now, I'm loving the new Schulz Nursery on Broadway in Alamo Heights. It's a bit of a drive, but there's a reason why Schulz has such an excellent regional reputation. As for celebrity gardeners, I love Central Texas Gardener. And then there's the information on Texas extension offices, which have LOTS of good tips.
  • What are your favorite books and magazines? Books are my weakness...my faves are listed in my Amazon bar at right. That said, I find myself reading a LOT of gardening advice online....am really into the online extension office-type stuff right now. (And then there's Mom...who is my #1 resource on all kinds of topics.)
  • What have you had success growing in your fall garden? This is my first year to grow a fall garden at this location! We're trying tomatoes, corn, pumpkin and beans. Am really excited to test the three sisters planting technique. I love the history behind it and think it'll make a lovely conversation piece out back. I always have to have a few flowers--zinnias, marigolds and--this year--some sunflower seeds from Wildseed Farms.
  • When do you plant and harvest it? Well, as this is my first fall garden at our new house, I pulled some stuff and planted new seeds and seedlings last week.
  • What is your favorite gardening tip? Never underestimate the power of your soil. You have to take care of it...am now learning how to do that as never before.
  • Why do you call your garden a _________ (Victory Garden, Peace Garden, Freedom Garden, vegetable garden, kitchen garden...etc.)? Personally, I like "Victory Garden" because of its inherent spirit of patriotic duty and strong sense of history. But the other names are great, too. Viva la difference!
Plan to copy and answer these questions yourself on your own blog and ask others to follow suit? Please do! And, yes, you can add questions, too...memes allow for adaptation! Want to see who has already signed up to participate? Please visit this page now and link back to it often!

(Oh, and speaking of Victory Gardens...don't forget Victory Garden Drive 2008!)
