With the growing season coming to an end in many places, stories about Victory Gardening have trailed off some what. Therefore, I'm going to start dedicating more M&WW posts to other interesting, eco-friendly topics until Spring rolls around...when I predict there will be even more chatter about VGs!
Today, I'm mixing up some reports about home spaces and places. Enjoy!
Mainstream Media:
• Eco Homes: Rail Carriage (Telegraph, London, U.K.) - An interesting refashioning of a rail car.
• Contemporary and Flexible (San Antonio Express News) - The developments mentioned in this article are a bit financially out of reach for most folks, but I really do think that a return to modernism might make for simpler, more eco-friendly dwellings in our region. I guess the question is if the high-end trend can move toward affordability, too. We'll see.
• Growing the Olive Branch (San Antonio Express News) - Olives in Central Texas now...very cool. Oh, and we've got vodka, too. It's a pretty cool place to live! In this article, I especially liked this section:
“I'm trying to find some industry down there in South Texas to replace the old vegetable industry,'' Conly said.
The area, known as the winter garden, once grew all kinds of vegetables, including spinach, carrots and onions, Conly said.
“With the Depression and the drop of the water table, a lot of the farmers quit,'' he said. “In most cases, the land grew back into brush and prickly pear.”
Since the 1930s, the land hasn't been farmed, Conly said.
“I was in hopes that the olive industry would revive that area,'' he said. “I was willing to give it a whirl.”
