Water, Water...Well, It's Not Really Everywhere

As winter turns to spring here in Central Texas, I've been thinking quite a bit about water and the role that it plays in my garden. Right now we're in the midst of an extended drought. The grass is particularly brown and crunchy, even for this time of year. Truth be told, I see no end to this water shortage in sight.

So, as I look to my second Victory Garden, I'm keeping a few things in mind:

1. I'll need to rely more heavily on soaker hoses this year in the vegetable beds. Not only do the hoses provide water directly to the plant's roots, but it's far more convenient to attach them to the faucet and set a timer in my kitchen. This will help me set up a schedule and routine for watering, and hopefully conserve a bit of water in the process.

2. Mulch is going to be especially vital. It helps keep moisture in place rather than evaporate. Once my plants (I've put out a few seeds; more on that later) get going, the mulch will be applied promptly.

3. Last summer proved that I need to keep my expectations for July/August in check. It's simply too hot here for much to survive. I'm seriously considering let the vegetable garden go more or less dormant then...at least until it's time to plant for fall.

I'm curious to learn more from those of you who deal with hot, dry climates.

Tell me...what advice/tips/strategies do you employ?
