Now That We've Got Your Attention, Mr. President & Mrs. Obama (An Open-ish Thread)

Seeds? Plant starts? Oh, the choices!

Many of us are elated at the news of the new White House vegetable garden. Like many Americans, the Obamas see value in growing fresh produce at home. And, like those of us who take up gardening in a new location, they're bound to encounter a lot of "advice."

So, I thought it would be fun to give folks a place to offer their garden tips/links/ideas in an upbeat, bipartisan fashion. Other sustainable living ideas are welcome, too. Gardening is, after all, a gateway to a deeper understanding of the world. And it fosters a desire for environmental stewardship, too.

I'm going to make my suggestions below, in comments and in the spirit of democracy.
