Hanging in There...

As you may recall, our first garden of the year started off great, only to be struck by a late freeze and a drought. Oh, and let's not forget a heatwave. In July, I stopped watering because, well, it just felt wasteful to pour the water into the raised beds when it was too hot and dry for anything to set fruit.

In very early August, I pulled out the dead stuff, added some compost and waited a few days. Then I picked up six tomato plants at the local farmers market, a few broccoli and cabbage starts from a Boerne nursery, six Antigua marigolds, and grabbed a basket filled with some seeds leftover from last fall... and started over.

Surprise! Within a few days, we got a break in the weather. Temps went down, rain came down... and slowly but surely the shoots are coming up. The tomatoes have flowers, too.

There's a lesson here, I'm sure. Somewhere.

Meanwhile... quite a few of us followed last week with interest Rose Hayden-Smith and Roger Doiron's trip to Washington, D.C. where they and a few more folks visited the White House garden. You can read Rose's blog posts about the trip here
